نشرت قصة موت مُعلن عام 1981، ونالت شهرة واسعة. تروي قصة اغتيال سنتياغو نصار على يد التوأمين فيكاريو. منذ بداية القصة يعلن أن سنتياغو نصار سيموت: إنه الابن الشاب المهاجر عربي، والمتهم في هتك شرف أنخيلا، أخت التوأمين، وكانت قد تزوجت في اليوم السابق، فرفضها زوجها لأنها ليست عذراء، وأعادها إلى أهلها. لم يكن هنالك قط موتاً معلناً كهذا»، هذا ما يقوله من يتذكر الوقائع بعد سبعة وعشرين عاماً من حدوثها : فالمنتقمان لم يتوقفا عن التصريح بنيتهما قتل سنتياغو نصار أمام القرية كلها، كما لو أنهما يريدان تجنّب ما فرضه عليهما القدر، لكن مجموعة من المصادفات تحول دون أن يتمكن من التدخل من هم قادرون على منع وقوع الجريمة، وبعض هؤلاء لم يصدقوا، أو لم يحسموا أمرهم ويقررون التدخل إلا بعد فوات الأوان. وحتى سنتياغو نفسه يستيقظ في ذلك الصباح بلا هموم أو قلق، جاهلا تماما بأمر الموت الذي ينتظره.
