It has reached its climax in various Arab countries, in particular in those which have been swept away by the “revolution” winds. With the advent of modernity, the identity of the Tunisian people has turned, as of the 1830s, into a polemical issue between, on the one hand, a group which believes in the “Oriental” spirit and origins of the country, opposing all that is Western, claiming that all that preceded the introduction of Islam is akin to ignorance and, on the other hand, another group claiming that Tunisia has a far more ancient history, that Islam and the Orient are but a segment of its identity and that Tunisian personality is the result of accumulations built over a very long historical depth. The January 14, 2011 revolution has deepened the polemics around the issue, though the essential motto it raised was totally unrelated to identity: “bread, freedom, national dignity”. In this book, Hedi Timoumi tries to examine the various facets of Tunisian personality through a different methodology, starting from the present time, excavating the depths of history, in search of the accumulations that led to the attainment of its present-day characteristics. لم تحظ بعد الأدبيات التركية العثمانية التي مثلتْ السياق العالِم والأيديولوجي معًا لما سُميَ "إلغاء الخلافة"، بالاهتمام البحثي الكافي في العالم العربي. هذا ما يبدو أنه دفعَ (رمضان يلدرم) مؤلف هذا الكتاب الذي نقدّم هنا أوّل ترجمة له إلى العربية، إلى أن يقول دون كبير تحفظ "إن الدراسات العربية التي تناولت مسألة الخلافة اتصفت بالسطحية أساسًا، لقلة اعتمادها على المراجع التركية". صحيح أن هذا التوصيف قد يبدو حكمًا تبخيسيًا متسرعًا، أو مبالغًا فيه، ضد الدراسات العربية المعنية. ولكنه من الوجيه على أي حال أن نقول إن الدراسات والمؤلفات العربية في هذا الباب ظلّتْ، منذ نشوء الدول القطرية ما بعد الاستعمارية ومدوناتها المدرسية أو التربوية، لا تأخذ غالبًا بما يكفي، بعين الاعتبار، الخلفية العثمانية لمثل هذه القضايا. لقد أصبح إذًا ملحًّا في السياقات الراهنة أن نقوم بتحليل متأنٍ لهذا التعالق التاريخي، وللسياقات التي أنتجتْ الخيارات الفكرية والإيديولوجية التي تصارعت، لا سيما مع بدايات "المسألة الشرقية"، حول مفاهيم مثل: علاقة الدولة أو الأمة بالخلافة، وعلاقة القانون الدولتي بالفقه ومذاهبه، والطريقة التي استُثمرَتْ بها مفردات إسلامية إلى جانب مفردات أوروبية حديثة لصياغة أنماط من الخطاب والسرديات، أو أنماط من التشكلات الذاكراتية "المحيّنة" أو المخترعة. من هنا جاءت أولوية الاهتمام بالاطلاع على الخلفية العثمانية وأدبياتها، ولكن أيضًا على الطرق والمناحي التي يتمثّلها البحث الأكاديمي التركي المعاصر، وهو جهد تأتي ترجمة كتاب (رمضان يلدرم) إلى العربية، كإسهام فيه.
